THELMA brings exhibition to connect with Japanese culture

Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts (THELMA) announced it will host artist Nishiki Sugawara-Beda and her exhibition “I’ll Be There” March 18 through May 1, 2021.

A virtual artist exchange, where we will hear about Sugawara-Beda and her artistic process, will be held Thursday, March 18 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. To join the conversation or more information visit thelmaarts.org.

Nishiki Sugawara-Beda was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States as a young adult. Currently working and residing in Dallas, Sugawara-Beda’s artwork builds connections between her culture past and present. Working in traditional Sumi ink, Sugawara-Beda presents us with black and white abstract mark making where “spiritual and imaginative worlds emerge”.

Her sumi paintings ignite subjective creativity in the viewer as they find their own imagery and meaning in her artwork. Sugawara-Beda intends for “I’ll Be There” to be “an arena for all of us to communicate beyond culture, language, and time”. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to learn and connect to elements of traditional Japanese culture.

Sugawara-Beda has exhibited her work through numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally at commercial and university galleries, art centers, and regional museums. Her recent solo exhibitions include Morris Graves Museum of Art (Eureka, CA) in 2019 and Texas Women’s University (Denton, TX) in 2020. Her works have been shortlisted for various art competitions including the Door Prize (Bristol, England), ArtGemini Prize (London, England), and Prince Street Gallery (New York). Through artist lectures, workshops, and conference presentations at national and international venues, Nishiki promotes cultural exchange with her work.

Viewing the exhibit is free thanks to the generosity of Horicon Bank.
