Largest collection of Sturgeon artifacts in one place opens January 10 at THELMA
Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts (THELMA) announced it will feature an exhibition dedicated entirely to sturgeon in the Susan O. Ahern Contemporary Wing.
The exhibition, Ancient Survivors is a curated collection of artwork, artifacts, decoys, audio and articles related to the culture and science surrounding sturgeon. These elements have been collected from across Wisconsin and the Midwest. It will be the first time that they will be on public view in one location.
The exhibition is free and runs from January 10 – March 2. The public is invited to join the artists, biologists and sturgeon advocates who played a major role in the exhibition, for a free opening reception at THELMA Thursday, January 10 from 6 – 8 pm.
THELMA will also host a panel exchange Thursday, January 31 from 6 – 8 pm. The panel will feature Fred Binkowski and Ron Bruch, co-authors of the bestselling book People of the Sturgeon: Wisconsin’s Love Affair with an Ancient Fish, along with artists, biologists and other experts involved with the Ancient Survivors exhibition. The panel exchange is open to the public and free to attend.
Ancient Survivors comes to THELMA in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, UW Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences, University of Minnesota Duluth Fine Art Department, Oshkosh Public Museum and Sturgeon for Tomorrow.
The exhibit is just one-way THELMA is celebrating Sturgeon season in the Fond du Lac area. There will be classes, free music by Copper Box Friday February 8, three performances of the hilarious musical about Wisconsin and ice fishing Guys on Ice, and a Liquid Brunch Sunday THELMA will also host an ice sculptor, and drink specials all weekend.
THELMA is located at 51 Sheboygan St., in the heart of Downtown Fond du Lac’s Arts and Entertainment District. THELMA is a member-based, privately-funded non-profit dedicated to providing arts experiences not readily available in the area. Intimate concerts in the Great Hall, street concerts with major performers, indoor films, and art from world-renowned artists are available at THELMA. THELMA also offers a stunning backdrop for weddings, meetings and all social and corporate gatherings.
