THELMA Book Club
Registration is open and free to join the THELMA Book Club! Members are responsible to get their own books.
Led by Amy Manion, join us for an informational meeting October 1 at 7 pm. We will have a drawing and give five books away!
The book we will be reading is A Shout in the Ruins – a take on the idea of family, legacy, multi-generational issues by Kevin Powers. He will also be reading at THELMA as part of the Lake Reading Series October 30.
Poet & novelist Kevin Powers was born and raised in Richmond, VA. In 2004 and 2005 he served with the U.S. Army in Mosul and Tal Afar, Iraq. He studied English at Virginia Commonwealth University after his honorable discharge and received an M.F.A. in Poetry from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. His first novel, The Yellow Birds, won the 2013 PEN/Hemmingway Award for first fiction, The Guardian First Book Award, and was a finalist for the National Book Award. His most recent book is A Shout in the Ruins.

Set in Virginia during the Civil War and a century beyond, this novel by the award-winning author of The Yellow Birds explores the brutal legacy of violence and exploitation in American society.
