David Hein: Community Children’s Choirs in America
Part of THELMA’s Lecture Series. This is a free event focusing on visual arts, music, film and theatre.
As THELMA’s longest running program, and in recognition of the Fond du Lac Children’s Chorale 20th Anniversary, hear Marian University Assistant Professor of Music David Hein, and Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorale present the history and development of children’s choruses in America.
A nationwide children’s and youth choir movement gained enormous momentum through the decade of the 1980s. This was in response to a confluence of conditions in society; new thinking among music educators and choral music practitioners; vision and mission in faith communities; and a general shift in how society viewed children and the arts. Hein will explore four key figures in this history, detailing important aspects of their careers and organization process.
Linking it to Fond du Lac’s own Children’s Chorale, he will show how our community children’s chorus is a direct antecedent of this movement — through its founding directors. The presentation will include photos and video, and plethora of audio examples.Free
